An Evening with Ernesto Acevedo-Muñoz

We are very happy that Professor Ernesto Acevedo-Muñoz will be with us in Madison tonight. His visit for the Festival de Cine in March was prevented by a snow storm in Boulder, where he is the director of Film Studies at the University of Colorado. Please join us for his talk "Criminal/Live: Intertextuality and Meaning from Buñuel's The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz to Almodóvar's Live Flesh" at 6 p.m. Followed by screenings of both films. Sponsored by the Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program (LACIS). Special thanks to Ksenija Bilbija, Angela Buongiorno, Darcy Little, Sarah Ripp, and Alberto Vargas.

The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz (Ensayo de un crimen)

Mexico, 1955, 35mm, b/w, 89 min.
In Spanish with English subtitles
Directed by Luis Buñuel

With Ernesto Alonso, Miroslava Stern, Rita Macedo

Buñuel did not have the complete freedom he was later granted for Criminal Life... but he was able to inject some bizarre personal touches into the story of Archibaldo whose adolescence was disturbed by the death of a maid in erotic circumstances. (Archibaldo believes he killed her with the magic powers of a music box.) Now adult, he is destined to murder women, but Buñuel's characteristic perverse black humor adds a twist, which prevents him from fulfilling his desires.

Almodóvar's richly detailed tale of passion, perfidy and revenge examines how several lives are changed by a single gunshot. Elena is watching The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz while waiting for the arrival of her heroin dealer. She accidentally buzzes Victor into the building, and two cops follow quickly on his heels. Four years later, fate weaves their tangled interrelationships into a complex tapestry of destiny and guilt in this stylish, sexy film noir.

Music for the Eye: Selected Works by Joost Rekveld

Netherlands, 1991-2009, 35mm, color
Directed by Joost Rekveld

Acclaimed Dutch avant-garde filmmaker and installation artist Joost Rekveld visits Madison with a selection of his shorts. Inspired by "the lesser frequented by-ways in the history of science and technology" and fascinated by visual and aural perception, Rekveld combines complicated optical and mechanical set-ups with computer technology to create exquisite abstract animations—"music for the eye."
